EYFS Intent Statement

At Ettington CE Primary School, the best for every child is at the heart of what we offer. Our EYFS curriculum is designed to encourage independent, healthy and happy learners, who are curious about the wider world around them and care for others. It is ambitious, carefully sequenced and maximises cross-curricular links, whilst building strong foundations for each child’s future. We recognise the importance of each child’s prior experiences and various starting points and develop and adapt our curriculum to meet the needs of the children. This ensures we provide the experiences that our children need to become confident and resilient learners, who persevere and are ready to embrace all that school has to offer - 'Learning for the Fullness of Life'.

Every child is recognised as a unique individual, and we acknowledge and promote children’s interests to provide them with the opportunities to follow their curiosity, imagination and creativity, whilst developing a love for learning. We aim to provide new and exciting experiences and knowledge that opens our children’s eyes to the wider world around them. Through Reception, our children are encouraged to explore, investigate, take risks and develop new and existing skills. We invest time in helping children recognise their personal goals, which allows them to reflect, aim high and make progress across the seven areas of learning.

We work in close partnership with our parents and carers to support each child’s learning and growth and develop key skills such as independence and effective communication. Our curriculum has a clear focus on developing children’s communication and language skills during the early years. In working with our parents and carers, we aim to support our children in becoming confident and effective speakers, who communicate clearly, listen carefully to others and draw upon a broad and rich vocabulary.

By the end of Reception, our goal is for our children to be self-confident, independent and curious learners who persevere and clearly express their thoughts, feelings and ideas. They will be part of their wider community, able to work collaboratively with others and develop emotional resilience. With these skills and characteristics, alongside a carefully planned transition to KS1, the children at Ettington are well-prepared and ready to take the next steps in their learning journey.
